Maine Kelp Helps Local Community

In addition to providing our stores with incredible products like Sea-Chi and Fermented Seaweed Salad, Atlantic Sea Farms focuses on the effects of climate change in our Maine community.

Read their inspiring mission statement:

“Our founders created the first commercially viable seaweed farm in the United States in 2009, with the goal of diversifying how our coastal waters are used and providing a domestic, fresh, healthy alternative to imported seaweed products.

Now, more than ever, we need food sources that can positively impact the economic and environmental health of our coastal communities. Here in Maine, climate change is already making landfall, and our future depends on finding new ways for lobster fishermen to work on the water while improving the health of our oceans.

CEO Briana Warner works with fisherman all over the state of Maine to gather kelp for Atlantic Sea Farms.
“We identify, and work with, fishermen throughout the coast of Maine to help them start their own kelp farms. We provide technical assistance to help these farmers get farm leases, set up their gear, learn how to seed and harvest, and support their business planning. We also provide free seeds to all of our farmers. These folks are the soul of our business and we are proud to introduce you to them.”

Here are a few of the local fisherman they work closely with:
Justin Papkee – Long Island, ME
Matt Moretti – Portland, ME
Stewart Hunt & David Leith – Yarmouth, ME
Nate Johnson – Long Island, ME
Zach Petit, Blake Dickinson & Sean Martin – Freeport, ME
and many more along the coast.

Health Benefits:
According to the FAQ page on the Atlantic Sea Farms website, kelp is considered a superfood.
“This delicious sea veggie is popularly known as a great source of iodine, a vital nutrient that helps support healthy thyroid function and metabolism. Kelp has also been found to have anti-inflammatory properties and serve up antioxidants.
Kelp contains notable amounts of iron, manganese, calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc, riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, plus vitamins A, B-12, B-6, and C!”
