Sustainability

Sustainability in Action

Since 2005, caring for the land we call home, the people in our community, and the future of our planet has meant putting sustainability at the heart of everything we do. From supporting local farms to reducing waste, we’re committed to making a lasting impact on Maine’s food system and beyond.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

We focus on practical ways to care for our community and the planet—choices that make a real difference, from how we source our food to how we run our markets every day.

Support

We support local, sustainable farms and producers.

Reduce

We reduce food waste through composting and food donation.

Increase

We increase energy efficiency across our markets.

Advocate

We advocate for climate-forward legislation.

Certified for a Sustainable Future

Rosemont is proud to be recognized as a leader in sustainable food retail. Our Ratio Institute Sustainable Food Retail Certification reflects our dedication to reducing our environmental impact while operating more efficiently.

With this award, Rosemont Market & Bakery had been recognized for:

Saving 595,954 kWh of electricity per year

Preventing 422 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually

Reducing carbon impact equal to 92 cars off the road

Cutting energy costs by $66,000 per year

Reducing Food Waste with Composting

We’re proud to partner with Garbage to Garden, a local curbside composting service that turns our food scraps into nutrient-rich soil. Since 2020, we’ve composted more than 300,000 pounds—about 27 tons—of food waste each year!

Ready to start composting at home? Purchase a compost bucket at any Rosemont Market and sign up for Garbage to Garden’s pickup service.

Advocating for Climate Action

While small changes in our daily lives make a difference, large-scale action is essential. That’s why Rosemont supports the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, a policy designed to reduce carbon emissions by incentivizing clean energy solutions.

Sustainability is a Community Effort

We’re always looking for new ways to lighten our footprint and strengthen Maine’s local food ecosystem. If you have ideas, want to partner, or just want to learn more about our sustainability work, we’d love to hear from you!
